Apr 2, 2023 · Hi, I have the same problem. Outside temperature reads -5. It gradually increases to the correct temperature after driving the car for a while. My air con doesn't work because of this. I've had an auto electrician out, replaced the ambient temperature sensor and checked all the connections.
Jul 21, 2020 · Had a few of these not heating up or random gauge issues and its ended up being either the head gasket, cylinder head or block issues. The only common issue is they get no heat through the vents. Usually the coolant is a funny colour and there's back pressure in the coolant reservoir too. Hope this helps. Quote.

The sensor is connected to a voltage divider network. The varying resistance in the sensor causes a variation in the total current flow of the voltage to the computer.

It can happily go from 1/4 to 1/2 to 1/4 all day long, due to the effects of sitting in traffic, cooling fan turning on and off, and use of the heater. Unless its in the red, it all makes no difference.

The coolant coming into the expansion tank overheats, however, the temperature gauge on the dash reads normal the entire time. I have changed the head gasket and the cylinder head temperature sensor, with no change in results.

I would first check visually to see if the wires to this sensor are in good shape, and connected. If they look good I would as standard practice replace this sensor.
